So far in our read-along of my upcoming book, The Misunderstood Mind, we’ve explored what neurodiversity actually means—and then looked at the cultural, historical, and institutional forces that decided which kinds of minds would be considered “normal.”

But you can understand all of that and still not understand what it actually feels like to live in a neurodivergent brain and body.

That’s where we’re going in Part 3.

And this part gets much more personal.

This week’s chapters

Chapter 8: Stories from Inside the Neurodivergent Life

Chapter 9: How Neurodivergent Minds Think

Chapter 10: Our Sensory and Emotional World

Chapter 11: Masking, Identity, and Self-Discovery

We explore how neurodivergent minds process information, learn, create, organize, regulate, feel, and experience the sensory world.

But we also explore what happens when you spend years—or decades—moving through the world without understanding why you experience it differently.

Here’s a small excerpt from Chapter 11:

For many, this is the first realization that nothing was ever truly “wrong” with them. Their personal narrative shifts.

Childhood experiences of feeling different, social fatigue, emotional highs and lows, and struggles with expectations now fit into a cohesive, understandable pattern.

As clarifying as neurodivergence can be, the discovery often carries its own emotional weight.

The recognition often brings grief before it brings relief.

Some feel anger at the systems that missed them: schools, doctors, therapists who looked right at them and saw something else entirely.

Some grieve the child they were, the one who tried so hard and was told to try harder.

That last line lands hard for a lot of people.

Because, for so many late-identified neurodivergent adults, discovering neurodivergence isn’t simply learning something new about yourself.

It’s going back and reinterpreting an entire lifetime.

The child who was “too sensitive.”

The teenager who couldn’t seem to fit in.

The adult who was told they were lazy, difficult, disorganized, antisocial, dramatic, rigid, selfish, or simply needed to try harder.

Part 3 is about understanding that person from the inside.
